MAIA Receives Mayerson Academy Grant

On May 12, 2016, Mount Auburn International Academy (MAIA), a SABIS® Network public charter school located in Ohio, U.S., was announced as one of only nine schools nationwide to receive the Mayerson Academy’s Transforming School Cultures for Student Success grant. The grant, worth $10,000, is an opportunity to help schools create “thriving learning communities” by increasing student motivation, engagement, learning, and performance in grades 5-8.

In order to qualify for the grant, schools had to complete a “Request for Funding Proposal” that described the understanding, support, and fidelity of strength-based learning that is supported by the entire school.  This year, there were over 1,500 schools that applied for the grant and only nine awards were given: four public schools, two parochial, two charter, and one private school.

“We believe that we were awarded the grant because we were able to present a comprehensive implementation of the program and demonstrate how we are already implementing strength-based learning through the SABIS® Educational System,” explained Dr. Susan Moore, MAIA School Director. “This grant will help us solidify our strength-based culture and that we have already begun through our staff, students, and community.”

MAIA is a member of the global SABIS® Network. Founded in 2008, MAIA is a K-12 charter school that currently serves close to 500 students. With a student body that is 87% African-American, 5% Caucasian, 2% Hispanic, and 6% multi-racial, MAIA is committed to pursuing every avenue to ensure that all students, regardless of race and socio-economic status, are given an equal opportunity to reach their full potential and place them on the path to college.
