International Academy of Saginaw's Winter Sports Promote Sportsmanship
Students in grades 2 and 3 at the International Academy of Saginaw (IAS), MI recently had the chance to learn the importance of good sportsmanship and physical fitness while being involved in after-school activities. It all started when a PE teacher and basketball coach set up a winter sports program at the onset of the 2007-08 academic year. Aimed at enriching the athletic skills of students, the sports program included forming two basketball teams from Grade 2 and 3, which was a first for the school.

As part of the program, coaches teamed up to teach IAS students the fundamental skills of dribbling, passing, shooting, and learning the importance of sportsmanship on and off the court. "We are teaching these kids teamwork, respect, and motivation. This will help students stay focused on academics and enjoy after-school athletics," the coach stated. In their first game on January 17, 2nd and 3rd graders showed courage in playing against each other while also enjoying a fun match. "Next year, we will try to partner with other schools. Our students need a little more practice first", pointed out IAS Director, Christi Seiple-Cole.
IAS opened last September in the Bridgeport area in Saginaw, MI for KG-Grade 3 students. The tuition-free charter school plans to add an additional grade each year, eventually growing to include grades K-12. The school is part of the global SABIS® School Network and caters to the academic, physical, social, and moral development of each student.
