HCCS Student Honored for Academic Achievements
Keila Roma is a 13-year-old 7th grade honor roll student at the Holyoke Community Charter School (HCCS) who has seen her dreams come true in more ways than one. On June 17, 2009, Keila was publicly recognized as one of 15 academic all-star students from various local schools in Western Massachusetts as part of Latino Youth Recognition Day at Fenway Park. In addition to the honor of being selected as an academic all-star, Keila was also chosen to sing the national anthem at the famous baseball park.

The Latino Youth Recognition Day, the second one this season to be organized by El Mundo newspaper and the Boston Red Sox, the state’s professional baseball team, honored students for their outstanding academic accomplishments and leadership skills. Students, including Keila, were handed certificates of recognition in front of over 38,000 people in attendance.
Keila is an honor roll student at HCCS. Since she joined the school in 2005, Keila has been fully engrossed in the SABIS Student Life Organization®. In 2005, she started as an Activity Prefect organizing and documenting events. In 2008-2009, she became the Deputy Prefect of Management and will be leading the SLO™ at HCCS as the Head Prefect in AY 2009-10.
But Keila’s dream was achieved when she was chosen to sing the national anthem at Fenway Park. Keila, who mesmerized the audience with her performance, shared that special moment with her late grandfather. “I dedicated it to the memory of my grandfather, so I just knew he would be helping me all the way through it,” said Keila.
Keila began singing at the age of four and has been actively honing her skills for the past eight years. She aspires to be a professional singer and has been relying on the support of her family to make headway.
Keila Roma exemplifies the value added through a SABIS® education, which promotes achievement, instills life skills, and prepares students for success in college and beyond.
